The more I look around, the more I see peers within the industry listening to the same handful of podcasts, reading the same collection of books, and attending the same series of seminars. The crazy thing about this habit is that each of them are doing so with the intention of gathering wisdom that will help them to perform at the top of our field.
But how are we supposed to outperform our contemporaries if they are the only people we’re learning from?
My most impactful inner-circle influences include an insurance guy, a private equity guru, and an early stage tech investor who sets foot in a weight room roughly once every ten years.
I can learn from my colleagues, but it’s the wisdom gathered from the outsiders that is going to elevate me to the top of my field.
