How Gym Owner Mood Impacts Performance
The way you show up as a gym owner can shape your team’s energy, performance, and experience—even through small everyday behaviors.
The year is 2018.
I’m in MFF’s loft before our full team meeting.
Everyone’s shuffling in. With 25 people in a relatively small space, there’s lots of energy and playfulness.
And I’m hyper-focused with my nose in my computer, banging out email responses, largely oblivious to the happy banter.
Here’s why this is an issue…
As a leader, your behavior is “loud.”
At all times, your team is watching you closely for subtle signs that:
1) The business in general is ok and safe
2) Their relationship with you is ok and safe
I’m not suggesting they’re obsessing about you. They’re not.
They’re thinking about their job, their life, their feelings, their needs, their wants, etc.
However, most leaders underappreciate how their “way of being” impacts performance.
I’m not being woowoo. I’m talking about cause and effect.
If you show up calm, grounded, warm, and positive, it will be contagious.
If you show up stressed, untethered, distant, and negative… it will also be contagious.
I don’t think I’ve always gotten this right over the years.
At times, particularly at MFF, I was too stuck in my own brain. I wasn’t outwardly focused. I could have done a better job at always stepping into the space to project care and warmth and a grounded energy for the team.
Specifically, I could have made sure I wasn’t checking my phone as I walked in. I didn’t need to rush to open my computer to answer emails. Instead I could have entered the space with an open affect and been deliberate about greeting each team member warmly and by name.
Now I don’t want to oversell this for the sake of making the story better. I did ok here. But in retrospect, too many of our team meetings began with my head down in my computer.
It’s a small thing. But the small things always add up to the big things.
I do think I’ve gotten better at this lately. Though admittedly that’s partly because I mostly run my current gym remotely, and BFU is all remote.
However, if you work in a full time in-person role with people who look to you as the leader,
Be mindful about the energy you bring into the space.
Because it’s going to transfer to your team and their performance, and hence to your clients and business’s results.
Awareness precedes change,
Mark
