Misusing the “Difficult” Tag

Few of us are programmed to respond favorably to unsolicited constructive criticism. Tough feedback regarding our operation can feel like an especially hurtful character blow if we lose sight of the fact that we are not our business.

Thankfully, my buddy Mark Fisher has hammered the same line into my head more times than I can count:

Feedback is data.

Feedback isn’t judgment of my character. Feedback is a gift.

The “difficult” client who cares enough to write a critical email, leave a constructive voicemail, or look me in the eye and deliver challenging feedback is an invaluable asset.

Let’s stop hitting the mute button on people who care to see us improve, and save the silent treatment for internet trolls.
