A somewhat self-aware business owner will tell you that his employees are his best asset. An extremely self-aware one will tell you that his employees are his business.
People with impressive resumes are replaceable. Skill-sets are most definitely replaceable.
What is not replaceable, however, is the unique collection of relationships your employees have established with your clients. If you’re in the service business, you’re in the relationship business.
Relationships are the off-balance sheet asset that you’re seriously undervaluing if you’re preparing to hastily off-load an employee. Proceed with caution.
